Making the Connection: Trauma, Adversity and Communication Needs

Our early lives shape our ability to communicate, and to form relationships. What happens when children experience trauma and adversity? This exciting new workshop balances theory and practical approaches in an exploration of the nature, presentation and management of communication and relationship needs. It will be of interest to anyone who works with adults or children who have experienced trauma or other forms of childhood adversity.
Trauma, Adversity and Communication Needs meets the Key Indicators of Good Quality Trauma Training set out under the Scottish Psychological Trauma Training Plan.
Participants will:
>Examine the effects of trauma and other Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on the development and consolidation of communication and relationship skills.
>Discover the effects of trauma and adversity on the developing brain, and explore implications for work with individuals at any stage of life.
>Explore the presentation of communication needs in the populations you work with, find out how to identify individual needs, and form specialist strategies for effective communication.
>Learn how to make communication more personalised and responsive to individual strengths and needs.
>Develop approaches to practice that are truly inclusive.

- Explore, in an interesting and accessible way, what neuroanatomy and neuropsychology can tell us about young people with ADHD.
- Examine the links and divergence between trauma and ADHD symptoms.
- Gain an overview of current issues in ADHD treatment and management.
- Learn what the latest theories about ADHD mean for engaging young people with the condition.
- Develop an understanding of the impact of ADHD and related conditions on young peoples' communication skills and ability to engage in education, work and training.
- Explore practical approaches to supporting and including young people with ADHD.
- Identify barriers to participation for young people with ADHD, and develop new strategies to address these.
- Learn new techniques and take home a folder of activities to start using straight away.
